Fitbit’s at it’s Finest

Fitness trackers where to start. You can get a basic one or one that does everything for you except have a relationship with someone else. The relationship part is up in the air since you can text and call from most of the newer ones. Over the last 6 years they have changed from just keeping track of steps to get you to the 10,000 recommended steps a day to being able to talk on them. That being said….there is so much for the marketing world to keep up with from all the different types.

I interviewed an instructor at the YMCA that wears one everyday, as long as it is charged. She had stated that to market a product for her to really get into, it has to be a funny commercial or a competitive ad. Tricia had stated that if you want people to buy your product and it is a fitness thing, advertise with competitiveness. It will draw the fitness people into that model or brand. She stated that there are so many of them out there right now it is hard to determine the difference between the name brands. The only one that stands out from the rest is the Apple watch, which is more than a fitness tracker and has a big name. People want to be on the go and don’t want anything to hold them up, so advertising what is all included in a fitness tracker, smartwatch, is the best way to go. Tricia did state that having too much on a watch is a turn off for her. She wants certain things and would love a watch that she could pick the items that she wants on hers.

If you take what you know about smartwatches and what Tricia had said about creating her own, wouldn’t that be a great new way for a product. I know it would be a great marketing promotion. Create your own smartwatch, have only the items that you want on it and pay for only those features. I think people would love the option to make watch. People love options and to be able to have a say in what they buy. Win win for everyone.

What are your thoughts on having people be able to create their own watch with only the features they will use?

Marketing Mix

The 4 P’s, who doesn’t remember from our first semester about all the P’s, well this girl right here. We learn the concept of the marketing world and we concentrate on the bigger things but when we look at it as a whole, we are using the product, price, place and promotion but maybe not how we should. I think we forget about the terminology we learn through out the semester and just focus on the big price of how to be successful.

Being successful in the marketing world we need to know the marketing mix. The definition of the marketing mix is the combination of factors that influence you to purchase a product. Along with that comes the 4 P’s. Product – what are you selling. Place – where are you going to sell it. Price – what are you going to be able to sell it for. Promotion – how are you going to promote your product for the world to see and experience it.

“Everything we hear is an opinion, not fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not truth.? – Marcus Aurelius

If you really look into this quote, it is true. It is posted on Facebook….it must be true. Consumers believe what they see not all the time what is the truth.

If you look at the chart below from Pepsi. They list it out what products they have, which some of them I did not know they own the rights to. If we look at the soft drink part of it, there are other competitors that offer similar soft drinks with just a different name. Pepsi has to come up with a great way to get customers to buy their products and not Coke’s. Pepsi wants to be on top, so how do they get there. Price is a big factor for a lot of the products we as consumers, consume. Why would I want to pay an extra dollar for Sierra Mist rather than Sprite? There is the taste for some consumers but most of it is so close that they want the price and how easy it is to purchase the product, so place.

Realizing this is the last blog for Marketing Analytics and we are talking about the marketing mix, it shows how important the 4 P’s actually really are to be successful in the business world of marketing. Moving forward in life to help other companies, I see how the face of the marketing world has changed in the last 10 years. Some competitors play fair while others play dirty. I want to be on the side where we play clean and win with the product we are selling. Using the 4 P’s will get me to where I want to be with the company, and help the be successful in the product they want to sell and have flourish.

How important is Branding!

How you brand your product is very important. You have to make sure that you reach people and by reaching people I mean, when you need new tires, what is the first thing to pop in your mind? For me it is Michelin Tires because of the big white tire creature they have in their commercials and sometimes outside places they sell those tires. Brand recall is the ability to recall the brand from memory. Brand recognition is confirmation of brand you had exposure to.

This brand can either scare you with the creature or bring you to their store when your tire blows, but it will stick in your head for this brand.

Another brand that a lot of people use is Amazon. It has a picture of a smile and they offer Amazon prime. When you are sitting thinking about where to order something from fast and no shipping, Amazon pops out. 1-2 day shipping for free if it is with Amazon Prime. There are so many options with the prime that people don’t recognize the full brand. Amazon has just really started to push the movies and the music they offer to their prime guests. They have to try to keep up with the rest of the market in the movie, book and music area.

Amazons branding is their smile on their boxes, even on their logos. What makes a brand stick in your memory? That is the important question to all who are trying to sell something. How do we get people interested in the product they may have never heard of or seen before. It is all in the marketing of the brand. How you reach people and give the impression of your product is everything. What your product stands for. If you think about the most coming news with Amazon, you don’t have to mail the items back but just take them to Kohl’s to return them. In my head for branding on this one is that Kohl’s returns everything no questions asked. How is that going to effect the Amazon brand or even the Kohl’s brand? It is a lot to merge together and put under one roof. You have to think of when you do your budget, financials and even marketing, there is 2 companies and not just one.

If you look at branding from a distance and put it together with conversion rates and mobile marketing, people still need some sort of special thing to stick in their heads to remember your product. Your marketing can be key on and your conversion rates can be amazing, but really businesses still need to focus on a big branding to have consumers remember before other products.

Germany’s Mobile Marketing

The mobile marketing in Germany has been on the rise for years. They are trying to keep up with other countries, which some are harder than others. Similar to a Wisconsin person going over to Germany or another country and trying to participate in a drinking contest. We would take it from what they say. Not really sure if that is a good thing to be known for.

In 2017 Germany started out with a little over 800,000 apps and when the article was written in September they were over 1.1 million apps. Compared to the United States, we had around 2.2 million apps by March of 2017. What does that say about as a country….there is an app for everything. Germany is the number one app market in Europe. France comes in second. For the amount of money they pay for their ads, they are planning for it to go from 3.5 million to 5.5 million by 2021. The question is, are they going to have enough consumers to make that money up and then some? That is the question that we still need to answer when we spend money on marketing in the mobile world or just the day to day world.

By looking at the picture below, that is only some of Germany’s mobile marketing apps and users. With each year Germany keeps growing their market with more users and more apps. Every country has to try to keep up with what is trending to stay on top of it. Most of the top used apps in Germany are travel ones. Where as in the US we are all about the social media apps. It makes me feel like we are about ourselves and sharing it with everyone than truly living. That brings up a good argument about are people living? We only get one life and the amount of time that we spend on our mobile devices is so sad. That is truly how we function. Germany’s apps in the top category are based off of travel which makes me realize that they are out their living and not worrying about what so and so is doing down the street.

“Marketing is telling the world you’re a rock star. Content Marketing is showing the world you are one.” – Robert Rose

With each year that Germany is growing it is not only having an effect on their market but others around the world. I wish that we would use our travel apps more and apps that are developed to see what there is to do. Our top apps are social media, how to compete with the person next to you. If you take Instagram, how many people are on their to learn about things and not just view how this or that person looks. We need to consider a lot of things on how we post but that will never happen. It makes us look very selfish and self centered Americans.

Charts Oh My

Charts, charts and more charts. Where do we start when we have to decide what chart is our best option for the information we need to share with others. Let’s look at just a few different options that would be my go-to for charts if I had to create one.

Bubble charts are some people’s favorite types of charts to work with when it comes to comparing categories or dimensions. They are a fun shape and use normally 3 different sizes. If there are more things to compare you can change the color of them to make it easier to read and add more information to it. In order to be able to use a Bubble chart you need to have a set of values. The size of the bubbles goes off of the value data series.

Pie charts are a favorite of mine to use. It gives basic information when that is really all that is needed on certain items. Unlike the article below that they state that the pie chart is not a good option to use. It does give basic data and for what social media wants it for, the information you would get off it would not be enough to increase conversions or even be able to improve the websites. It is more for basic survey answers or to get a solution that doesn’t need a lot of data to accomplish it.

“We can chart our future clearly and wisely only when we know the path which has led to the present.” Adlai Stevenson I

The conclusion on the charts, I’m sorry but they do not excite me like the drive that we get when the product that we are marketing sells more than what we though it would. I am more of a non-profit marketing person. I like to get people involved more than finding out how much money we have made. The conversation rate is still needed for me along with charts to determine if the people using the website for information is increasing or decreasing.

Mobile for the better?

The article talks about certain ways they are going to push the mobile world forward. How can you experience even more through your phone? How fast can it go and where are we going to be in 5 years with buying products online?

With each year technology increases whether we want it or not. People want instant gratification and putting it all in the palm of your hand, makes it a lot easier. Bring in 5G like they talk about in the article, will make everything faster. The problem I see with it moving so fast, is a lot of mess ups. We have increased the data speed tremendously in the last few years. Adding towers and fiber optic wires to create a faster internet, data speed. What I guess I question on this is the article only talks about the positive. I understand that this is a social media class but I also feel that being on your phone more than people already are, how is that living? How are we making the marketing world better by taking people away from their family time or even just living to be more attached to their mobile devices?

“Despite extensive research, to date there is no evidence to conclude that exposure to low level electromagnetic fields is harmful to human health”

If you take a look at the article above it talks about how 5G and the towers could impose a health issue to you. Getting exposed to higher levels of radio frequency is not a good thing. Again, we are expose to so much that can effect us in our day to day life but do we really want to take the chance and increase illness to make the data better? There are a lot of people that would believe it is worth it. I am not one of them. I believe that the marketing world is changing and the digital aspect is even on a faster pace to keep up with what the consumer wants.

What way should we go? Only way to go is to keep moving forward which means it comes with good and bad. I just hope that the good out weighs the bad.

Mobile for the better?

Using my phone versus my laptop, what is easier? There are pluses and minuses to both but like most people in the world, I am a single mom who works full-time, goes to school full-time and has two teenage boys that forget that they need certain things till the last minute or it is too late. Which is easier, grabbing my phone that seems like it is attached to me 99% of the day to order off of, or open my laptop and start the whole process of turning it on.

Using this app to order things from my phone is what every young person is looking for. Instant gratification without a lot of work.

There are so many apps to choose from to order off of. There is uber, uber eats, amazon, Target, Walmart, and plenty more where that comes from. So, when I look at it on whether to use my phone or not, it would be yes. There are things that I can do on my phone versus on my laptop and things that I can do on my laptop instead of my phone. It is easier to use the app to do a quick order but if you look at the pictures below, which one looks more welcoming?

After looking at both pictures which one would you choose to shop from? It is easier to use the desktop version since it is nicely displayed but that isn’t what people go for anymore. Fast and easy. It seems that since everything is being wanted at the instant gratification level that we are missing out on so much. The apps that are used by most families, Amazon being one, could use a little revamping. They know what you want and they push those items to you, but what about items that are a hot deal and you miss out on! The app can only show so much. By only using apps for things we get stuck in our normal routines of what we order and use, what can we do to mix it up. Well if you put this class and the other ones we take for this program together, we can make apps and websites grow together.

“Marketers need to build digital relationships and reputation before closing a sale.” –Chris Brogan, Chief Executive Officer of Owner Media Group

The long story short, we need to start using the apps and websites to make people see the things they are missing. Slow it down and open our eyes to what is out there that we normally would not see. The question is how? How can we train people to think outside their norm, how do we collect the data we need to in order to give people what they may be looking for but just don’t know it yet?
